Note-taking is an art form. And here are some notes on proven strategies.
- Laptop vs Notebooks: They both have their pros and cons; laptops are increasingly becoming common, and most students can type faster than they can write. Most people or the new generation have almost forgotten how to write what’s more you can store all the information in one place. However, the laptop has its challenges in the calculation because there will be a lot of numbers and equations which kind of become challenging on a laptop, and the second most prominent problem of using the laptop is when you are making notes, you’re going to end up writing everything that the expert says verbatim, formatting leads to time-consuming and this has proven to result in lower test score overall.

So, I would recommend notebooks to write comfortably, solve equations quickly; you can easily use colorful pens. But remember, you don’t have to make your notes pretty; you have to make them a little organized.
- Don’t prepare notes just after starting a new chapter:– It has been observed that aspirants make their revision notes simultaneously with their studies. This is the time where many students go wrong and waste their time.
Firstly, go through every important topic of NEET so that it is easy to know the concept before. The purpose of making short notes is to revise important things quickly.
Because in the end, it’s not hard work but smart work that makes a difference.
For physics, go through the chapter and study all the derivations. Then write only the formula and key points of derivations so that when you’ll shuffle through them, it would be like an entire movie rewinding in your head.
Add questions you find difficult to solve, test questions, or book questions, in your notes.
Try covering your lesson in one or two pages. The lesser the volume, the more appealing they become.
For chemistry, aim primarily on organic chemistry. Formulate a table stating the name of reaction, reaction pathway (if it’s important, like for Cannizzaro reaction), and miscellaneous questions as the headings.
There’s no point making notes for physical chemistry as it’s more or less all about numerical.
For inorganic chemistry, make NCERT your final study material. Add whatever points you find extra to its sides!
For Biology, write only those points that you find forgetful in your notes. For instance, I always used to forget the stored food of various algae, so I just wrote this one point in my entire notes of Biological Classification.
- Use abbreviation or keywords wherever possible:– Note making is the unsung hero of study techniques. Using the right style, you can see the difference in your preparation. Making notes for prelims is optional, but the Final NEET Exam is mandatory.
It is tough to remember the entire syllabus without shortcuts and abbreviations. Try to make keywords to relate them while self-study makes Subheadings. Organize your notes in various subtopics and give them side headings.
Use flowcharts- diagrams: Using flowcharts and charts in the mains answer sheet will give you an edge. An easy way to bring them in exams is to practice them while taking notes themselves.
Use Mnemonics/ Mind maps: Use them in your notes if you are used to mind maps. Write down the mnemonics, too, in your notes.
- Give preference to logic over structure:– You can prefer phrases over sentences.
- Use all kinds of abbreviations and symbols you are comfortable with. This will serve two purposes.
- You can keep them in mind for long as those symbols stay better connected to your mind
- It will make your notes short and simple
- Sentences like ‘LL1 parsers do not parse ambiguous grammars can be substituted’ by ‘LL1-> amb’ or ‘LL1 -> ambiguous’ (This is just an example, use whatever is comfortable for you)
- That being said, do not invest your time and put extra efforts into inventing new shorthand. That’s going to overburden your brain. Use it if it comes to you automatically.
- Use bullet points instead of paragraphs: – Bullet points are more readable and accessible to understand than complete sentences. Once you complete the entire syllabus, you’ll be able to recall the whole background of a bullet point when you see it at a later stage.
Write some logical explanations that you find attractive in short words as explanations to those bullet points. (This part is dependent on you. If you are not confident, you’ll remember the background by seeing a bullet point write till the level you gain your confidence.)
The biggest mistake I have seen students making while taking the biology notes was that they would write all the notes of different topics in one notebook, one after the other, without any Segregation. If they miss one lecture or class, they will not leave space and continue on the following topic.
That can be problematic since the notes are jumbled. Segregate every topic and try to write notes in a different notebook or divide one notebook into two parts to avoid such a problem.
Conclusion: – I believe there’s no one IDEAL or PERFECT way of taking notes.
But it’s always good to have a guiding light to ensure whether our notes are good enough for us or not, whether they need a bit of tweaking or they’re fine just the way they are.
