When looked at as a whole, moving your household can seem overwhelming. However, if you follow a few moving tips and hacks along with a proper timeline and do all the tasks in an organized way, so, you can manage your relocation with ease.
At Least One Month Before Moving Day
- Order Moving Supplies (Boxes, packing paper, tape, labels, etc.)
- Begin your packing with one room at a time. Check out moving and packing hacks to complete your packing efficiently.
- Get your family documents from your physician’s and dentist’s offices.
- Take your dog’s, cat’s, or any other pet’s records from your veterinarian.
- Obtain copies of your children’s school reports.
- Choose a room by the front door or garage and stack all the packed moving boxes by size keeping similar boxes close together. This is one of the best moving tips and hacks since it cuts down on the time consumed on loading the truck by the local movers.
- Take photographs of complex wiring set-ups and insert prints in the boxes containing the electronic item. This will make it easier to set them back up and running in your new home.
- Fill the Change of address form at the Post Office.
- Create a list of all who needs to be informed, especially in case of a long-distance move.
The Following Could be a Good Start
- Accountant and investment firms you use
- Banks who hold your accounts and loans
- Phone companies – cell phone and landlines
- Physicians’ offices
- Dentist
- Relatives and friends
- Church
- Health Club

- Contact utilities and set up end-of-service dates, and prepare for your final bill.
- Contact utilities in your new city and plan start-of-service dates. Be sure to include phone, electricity, gas, and water.
- Order enough of your family’s prescription medications to last you until you are established in your new city with a new pharmaceutical provider.
- Another important moving tip is most people forget to pack and clearly label an Open Me First box. This box should have all the essentials your family will need right away in your new home: i.e. bathroom tissue, soap, towels, sheets, a few pans, pillows, pet food, flashlight, pliers, etc.
On the Moving Day
- Disassemble beds ahead of time, even if it needs sleeping on mattresses on the floor the night before. Having to deal with beds on moving days will slow down the movers. And in the case of local movers, their time is money, so be ready!
- Be on hand when the movers arrive.
- Discuss delivery arrangements with movers. In case of long-distance moving, plan your trip as per their schedule.
- Give all information on how you can be reached – phone number, destination motels, new home, cell phone, and work. Also, an alternate contact if you can’t be reached.
- Acquire the contact information of your movers – including his or her cell phone – and save them into your phone.
- Arrange for a sitter to watch your young children off-site from your move. That way, you can give your full attention to the move itself.
- Have directions and a map ready to give your mover and anyone else who will be driving from your old to your new address.
Things to Keep With You During the Move
- Contact details of movers and shipment registration numbers in case you need to call them. Keep in contact with the movers while you are in transit.
- If an item is valuable, take it with you in a box (jewelry, pictures, videotape, mementos, safety deposit box with all important documents, etc.)
- Carry traveler’s checks for quick, available funds.
- Prepare a backpack for kids with snacks, games, and surprises.
- First Aid Box
- Toilet paper, soap, toiletries.
- Flashlight, screwdriver, pliers.
- Telephone, telephone book (you may need numbers from your old town).
- Paper towels, paper plates, cups, utensils, a couple of pans, coffee pot & coffee.
- Sheets & towels
Just Last Things:
- Try and reserve a parking space for the truck if the area is congested near your home.
- When you arrive at your new home, check your belongings over carefully for damage. Do not sign anything until you have inspected all furniture and the exterior of the cartons.
