Lash Extensions: How to Map Them
Dream of giving your clients a set of lashes that look like they stepped out of the salon and directly into the pages of Vogue magazine? Well, now you can!
Lash mapping is one technique that allows for show-stopping lashes every time. When done right, lash mapping becomes an invaluable tool to any lash artist or tech looking to create fuller, more voluminous lashes.
It is the process of mapping out the natural lash line for each eye. This is an important step in creating beautiful and flattering eyelash extensions. Eyelash extension clients are usually most concerned with the fullness of their lashes. Mapping helps us create an even lash line, so clients can achieve thicker-looking lashes without the need for cluster lashes or a full set.
By mapping the lash line, you can create a more customized extension placement that looks natural and enhances the eyes. Let’s sail!
What is lash mapping?
Lash mapping is the process of mapping out the desired look for your client’s lashes before you start applying them. By taking into account the natural shape and contours of your client’s eyes, you can create a design that will complement their features and give them a look they desire.
A good lash artist understands the anatomy of the eye and knows how to create extensions on healthy natural lashes that will look flattering on each individual client.
Two methods for lash mapping
There are a few different methods of lash mapping that can be used, but we’ll focus on two common techniques: the pencil method and the wand method.
The Pencil Method
This is the most commonly used lash mapping technique. To use the pencil method, you will need a pencil or some other thin, pointed object that won’t smudge. You can also use brown eyeliner, but make sure it is non-smudging and not too dark.
Start by placing the pencil directly under your client’s nose about an inch above her lash line. Then slowly turn the pencil, so you are tracing the natural shape of her eye. Make sure to pay detailed attention to the contours and curves of her lash line, and make a note of any areas that are sparse or need more volume.
The Wand Method
The wand method is a newer technique that is gaining in popularity. You will need a lash wand and some lash adhesive to use the wand method.
Start by placing the lash wand vertically against your client’s nose, with the wand’s bristles pointing towards her eyebrows. Gently glide the wand along her lash line, tracing the natural shape of her eye. Be sure to pay full attention to the contours and curves of her lash line, and make a note of any areas that are sparse or need more volume.
Once you have mapped out the desired look for your client, it’s time to start applying the volume lashes! Again, we suggest using a combination of both methods to get the most accurate lash placement.
