In 2007, broadband penetration in the United States totaled 23.3%, equivalent to the EU15 average. What qualifies as broadband varies from country to country. While broadband in the United States is defined as a line exceeding 200 Kbps in at least one direction (upstream or downstream), in Europe a broadband line implies downstream access as of 512 Kbps.

 

Cable access continues to account for more than half (52%) of broadband access via cable networks versus 42% for ADSL and 6% for other technologies. As a result, ADSL penetration comes to a mere 9,7%, due to the failure of unbundling regulation and its highly complex implementation. This weakness stems from the failure of regulatory unbundling  regarding the effective scope of the Federation Communication Commission’s (FCC) definition of network elements to be included in unbundling and which leave the final decision across each zone to the local regulatory agencies and the incumbent.  

 

This complexity serves as a barrier to entry for new operators, thereby impeding the right conditions for competition. As a result, a number of states have an established market duopoly, whereby the cable operator and the ADSL supplier (an ISP) are both offshoots of the local incumbent.  Finally, in many rural areas, the number of suppliers providing ADSL services is limited to one.

While in the United-States, regional incumbents control 96% of ADSL plans, in  the United Kingdom, the incumbent posts  only 32% of the overall lines. In the United Kingdom, however, alternative operators can access the incumbent’s network, BT, via the bit stream to sell their own offers. In short, across the US, the number of unbundled lines totals 1.3 million, or 9.9%, which is relatively low compared to other European countries  (cf. Graph 3).

In either Germany or France, the number of unbundled lines respectively totals 37.1% and 29.5% of ADSL lines. The same figure in the US is a mere 14.5%. To speed up unbundling, the FCC has loosened regulation in terms of shared infrastructure and is encouraging the emergence of new technologies.

For the time being, however, the barrier to entry on the American broadband market impacts US prices which remain high compared to European levels.

In 2001, France Telecom bought the company and merged it with their existing mobile business. Up until 2006, the name, which was originally called Wanadoo, was changed to what it is today to simplify branding. With over 10 million subscribers across the UK, France, Poland, Equatorial Guinea, Spain, Senegal, Slovakia and Switzerland, their services extend beyond the Internet, landline, mobile and television services. Orange Home Broadband offers their customers a hassle-free environment with fast service. There are three different packages a customer can choose from if they want to subscribe to their network. Each package includes: eight Meg Internet speeds; free McAfee Privacy Service to protect a customer’s personal identification, children from viewing inappropriate images both online and on television and viruses or spyware from entering a computer; a CD explaining how to set up each service and free and 24 hour online support. The first package is called a “Home Starter” which includes the Internet for a low payment of 9.57 euros a month or free with any company mobile plan. It includes a wireless router which allows the user to move around the house while still being connected and calls to all UK landlines weekends and evenings.

Another package called “Home Select” and starts from 9.79 euros a month with a company mobile plan or otherwise from 19.75 euros a month. Included is the Internet, inclusive calls to UK landlines and 30 international destinations with a second line and a Livebox, which is a versatile wireless router. A customer can also hook their Xbox or Playstation to the box to connect to the Internet. The last package is called “Home Max” and starts at 13.97 euros a month or 4.18 euros a month (plus 10.50 euros for a line rental) with any company mobile plan. With this plan comes unlimited usage, a Livebox, their Xbox or Playstation can be hooked to it for the Internet, inclusive weekend and evening calls to all UK landlines and international calls.

In general, Orange provides customer satisfaction with its good Internet speeds and three different packages. However, there are several drawbacks. The first is 18 month contract a customer must agree to for each package. If this commitment is too big insist on a trial period and cancel if you are not happy. It may also help to surf their website before switching companies. And, although they claim their Internet speeds are 8 Megs, users may never obtain that speed. However, most customers within the company’s network gain speeds that are fast enough to satisfy their needs. The more expensive package will be the better choice if a customer is not within the company’s network.

If you are looking for unlimited access for a lower price maybe the Be value package will better fit your needs. You will still have the 24 hour 7 day a week access to the internet but will have 8 megs instead of 24 megs, for almost half the price of the Be unlimited package.

Last but not least is the Be Pro package. This package gives you all the benefits of the Be unlimited package plus offers faster uploading speeds and free IP address. If you choose a month to month term for payment you will be responsible for paying the initial start up cost. If you choose the 12 month contract and have to cancel before it is up, all you need to do is send in a written notice to cancel your service 3 months in advance. This will keep you from having to pay cancellation and other fees incurred.

Customers enjoy the prompt service request, friendly staff and 24 hour hotlines offered. If their service is interrupted at no fault of their own, Be broadband will compensate them. Be Value and Be unlimited customer’s service must be out for more than 5 days in a row and more than 24 hours for Be Pro customers. You simply have to notify the company as soon as the problem occurs and you will receive a discount on your future bill for each day your service was disconnected. BT Broadband Internet

British Telecommunications known to many as BT is the nations largest telecommunications provider. Not only do they offer phone lines to their customers but a range of packages including television and broadband or internet services as well. Despite the fact that there are other providers of this service, BT still ranks as the top provider with their unbeatable prices and fast connection speeds.

As a part of their promotional offer, BT is now offering three months free broadband to their customers. It states that all customers will have the opportunity to sign up to packages that brings all call back to BT will be getting free internet for three months. What this means really is anyone on broadband and a call package or anyone signing up to their triple play package with the company, calls and BT vision, their digital television service will in exchange get three months free broadband.

The three packages that the broadband comes in gives 8Mb speed. In addition to this they are also offering their customers 24/7 customer phone support from UK landlines as well as an online always available support system. Of the options they have on offer, option one gives 10 GB downloadable limit. If however you need more in terms of downloading capacity you may find that option two with a downloadable limit of fifteen GB is what you are after and finally you have option three which offers the customer unlimited downloads.

They also offer packages which start as low as seven pounds seventy eight per month and go up to a reasonable thirteen pounds sixty nine per month depending on what you require. Be mindful that after the initial three months the prices may differ so be sure to know which package would best suit your needs.

Not surprisingly there are mixed views on what customers think of the service offered to them by this long standing company. Despite the mixed reviews, customers have to admit that even if they have experimented with other service providers they find that they end up coming back to BT.

One customer reported to have been with BT since broadband was made accessible to him in his area which happened to be approximately three miles from the exchange. He reportedly finds them and their service to be second to none. In fact he has praised them to be excellent. Technical support he found to be spot on, where they were rather very patient, kind and understanding, wanting only to resolve the query or problem in the best way. Like most services offered, there is always room for improvement and he had this to say in terms of giving feedback.

Sad to say he has advised against using their Norton bundle as well as their browser setup which both proved to be a disappointment for him. On the upside, the BT Net protect/ Mcafee product is reportedly quite good and does the job well. Another customer has praised their service and boasts of getting 700 kbs from 12 – 5 pm . As with any service provided in life, we each have our preferences and so one will find that what happens to be an excellent offer, good customer service and reasonable deals for one turns out to be quite the opposite for another. You really just have to test the waters and see what works for you.

BPL (Broadband over Power-Lines) or PLC (Power-Line Communications) is a technology that has been on the books for some years now, only recently though has it started to find its footing.

As the name suggests, BPL involves using existing power-lines to transmit broadband data. This revolutionary technology could be used to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban communities with regards to internet access.

Even though internet penetration rates have rocketed over the years, especially with the introduction and uptake of broadband technologies there is still a large portion of the population that have either zero or limited access to the internet. Such customers are often found in rural areas, outside the reach of broadband technologies.

BPL however, works on the premise that nearly every inhabited building throughout the country has electrical outlets, and it is these outlets that BPL services plug into.

As mentioned, the idea behind using existing power grid infrastructure to transmit data signals is not new, and in fact this is something that electricity companies use to monitor power line performance.

The reason that this technology could be so easily incorporated is because current electrical infrastructure uses an alternating current (AC), which vibrates at a different wave length to the radio-frequency (RF) waves that data uses. Therefore, they can both travel down the same wiring.

However, instead of being able to transmit the data signals at the power source (i.e. power plants), which would have been the easiest option, the data signals have to be dropped onto the lines a little closer to home. This is because at the source of the power, the voltage is so high (or “noisy”) that it would cause too much interference with the data signals.

Therefore, BPL drops the data signals off onto the less “noisier” medium-voltage lines. From here the signals pass through various repeaters and couplers to ensure they reach their destination intact.

At the end of the line there are various ways that broadband can enter buildings. The new class of business enterprises, popularly known as Internet Service Providers were engaged in fulfilling the needs of the millions of internet users by providing them secure and speedy access to the Internet.

In strict technical terms, an ISP is an enterprise that offers users access to the Internet and related services. They provide services such as Internet transit domain name registration and hosting, dial-up access leased line access and collocation . Typically an ISP charges a monthly access fee to the consumer based on either internet usage hours.The client then has access to the Internet, although the speed at which this data is transferred varies widely depending on the technology used. They usually have infrastructures like communication setups, high-end servers and is connected to the national internet backbone through gateways with great bandwidth and reliable security protocols.

To understand the Internet Service Provider we must understand Internet connection methods. The internet data transfer speed can generally be divided into two categories, namely dialup and broadband. Dialup connections require the use of a phone line, and usually have connection speeds of 56KBPS or less. Broadband on the other hand, can be either ISDN Broadband wireless access, Cable modem DSL Satellite or Ethernet. Broadband provides always-on internet access and varies in speed between 64KBPS and 20MBPS. With the increasing popularity of file sharing and downloading music and the general demand for faster page loads, higher bandwidth connections are becoming more popular and the internet service providers are under pressure to upgrade to the latest trends in order to keep pace with the growing customer demands.
The ISP’s role is to provide any services beyond just Internet connectivity, such as e-mail, web hosting, and technical support. The ISP must perform all authentication and accounting functions necessary to provide access and then bill their users for it. ISPs have several multiple tier set-ups involving smaller ISPs to increase returns on investment and to efficiently manage a geographically large, high capacity network. Such a model with a network of smaller ISPs as customers of the larger ISP can be deployed to serve customers in locations where internet access could not have been provided by a single ISP.

The Internet Service Providers have survived through some testing times with governments taking their own sweet time in taking vital decisions relating to bandwidth and other internet-related matters. Commercial use of the Internet began in the early 90s. Connecting to the Internet in the beginning proved to be quite a challenge. Users had to figure out how to create dial-up connection on their own using Windows early versions. As the Internet gained momentum the technology began to evolve. Faster connections and easier software became available. V.90 which brought download speeds up to 56k or 56,000bps developed in 1998. Larger companies, began to offer Internet services.

Technologies changed fast and newer ones appeared on the internet scenario with monotonous regularity.Broadband, DSL, Cable Modems, Ethernet, you name it , the technology was there. Pricing, technology, and market share drove the Internet economy and the Internet Service Providers had to survive some fierce competition. Many small ISPs began using wireless technology to provide broadband access. Use of wireless technology fueled the way for wireless networks that are in common use today.Internet became fast and furious and ISPs were seen struggling to stay ahead as best possible. The Internet market seemed to settle and ISPs began to move forward. Broadband today has become the connection of choice. DSL and cable modem are the most popular broadband connections. Wireless Internet is still offered but has become more popular on mobile hand-held devices.

With the initial wobbles and shaky starts overcome, Internet Service Providers have today become the stable and secure manner of access to the internet. Encryption technologies, Secured Socket Layers and other accepted forms of internet security together with leap-frogging connection speeds have established these ISPs eliminating the threat of another dot.com crash and bringing great economic viability into this new breed of web enterprise. The debacles of the past could now be swept under the carpet.

Revolutionary technologies, brave new thrust areas and a great new will for survival have brought the ISPs to a crucial turning point in their existence. Today it is not a question of mere existence but one of qualitative existence. Bottom lines are crucial as they always were,but a new meaning has come in where the emphasis is on technology and quality rather than mere run-of-the mill services. The Internet Service Provider has truly entered an era of exciting new range of services apart from providing quality internet access through innovative new technologies.
