There is something enticing about the sight of antique wedding rings. It can be the feel of old-fashioned romance or just the beauty of the era that they were made. These are just some of the reasons why a substantial number of couples choose to have antique-style wedding rings, bands and engagement rings.
But before you head on out that door or before you shop online, here are some brief shopper’s tips in choosing an antique ring for this special moment in your life.
Know the jewelry styles of the era where you are buying from, so that sellers who are not looking after your best interest will not fool you. Rule of thumb? Jewelry sets from the Victorian era are mostly rose gold or yellow gold and they use what is known as the mine cut. Jewelry pieces from the Edwardian era have that unique openwork design. Jewelry collections from the 30’s to 40’s are popular for their intricate designs. Buy only antique wedding rings from a trusted source. There may be websites that offer cheap and exquisite looking pieces but they are shady at best. Be smart. Most of all, inspect the condition of an antique piece before writing that check. Check the stones if they are secured to the body. If it is an engagement ring, see if the prongs are in good condition, not skewing the diamond at the center in any way.
Hopefully, these smart shopper’s tips can help you find that antique piece that will complete your joyous occasion of love.

If you go back in time to Namibia some 27,000 years ago you will come to the birth of the human desire to appear attractive. In those days bird feathers and animal bones, seeds and dried sticks were used as pendants and earrings. Since most of these articles of jewelry were degradable not much can be seen today other than in cave drawings perhaps. But the prehistoric desire has not ebbed. From the time a girl achieves puberty or even earlier, her ears and nose are pierced. The wearing of earrings from an early age is still practiced in villages around the world. Antique earrings are therefore the commonest articles of personal jewelry found along with antique pendants. Egyptian jewelry among others has some beautiful samples of antique earrings in online shops.
Egyptian jewelry dates back to around 4500 BC during the time of El-Badari. Then came the golden age of Cleopatra, Nefertiti and the Pharaohs and the Greco Roman period when Egyptian jewelry flourished. The oldest among the antique jewelry from Egypt are probably the Fuluni Hoop earrings from the Sudan area or the Akuaba doll earrings worn as a symbol of fertility.
The ancient Egyptians were staunch believers of symbolism. This trait is reflected in virtually all ancient Egyptian jewelry. Gold was considered divine and symbolic of the sun god. Lapis lazuli was considered a sacred stone of celestial origin and symbolic of truth. The scarab beetle was widely used and symbolized rebirth. The carnelian was a stone that symbolized courage and great physical power. The blue lotus was symbolic of the god Nefertum of Memphis. He was the gold of perfume and the lotus that opened at dawn and closed at dusk was symbolic of divinity and eternal life.
When you go online you are amazed at the degree of care that has been taken to faithfully reproduce antique Egyptian jewelry especially earrings. You can buy a most attractive set of lotus petal and onyx earrings in sterling silver gilded with 22 ct gold or a set of Ankh earrings worn as an amulet said to possess unusual powers.

Antiques are always prized possessions – whether as family heirlooms, or as symbols of your own aesthetic taste and your power to purchase them. Silver is one of the more durable materials in which antiques are available, but keeping these antiques in their shining glory is still quite a daunting task.
If you have recently laid your hands on a precious antique silver artefact, make sure that only the most careful and expert people get to take care of it. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right people, and to take care of your regularly used silver yourself –
1. Consult experts before choosing restorers. Shops that sell antiques would be good to consult, while museums will definitely know the experts in silver restoration.
2. Do not remove all engravings. Just as a life without mistakes is a remarkably boring one, a silver artefact loses a part of its history if you remove important engravings. If you do choose to remove engravings, check that the material is thick enough to permit it without damage or distortion. Only an expert silversmith should attempt engraving removal or re-engravings.
3. Aluminium tape – a thin layer of aluminium with a sticky backing – is perfect to repair damaged screw threads. Wrap a layer over the damaged thread, and redefine the thread with your fingernail to make it more secure.
4. Store your silver in conditions of low humidity – 45% is the ideal humidity level. You can place your silver in a showcase containing activated carbon, silver salts, tarnish-reducing paper or silica gel to keep the humidity low without resorting to a dehumidifier.
5. Do not put your silverware in the dishwasher. Instead, wash it by hand with phosphate-free soap, and wipe it dry without allowing water to evaporate on its surface. This will keep it shiny and new, without developing spots or discoloration.
6. For silver vases or articles which are not used regularly, a good polishing with tooth powder and a soft cloth will restore its shine – even if it has developed that familiar brassy tinge with age.
7. Silver jewelry should be worn regularly, to keep its shine intact. Be careful with necklaces, though – some people find that silver tends to discolor on their necks very quickly, especially in hot weather. Stick to wearing silver only in winters to prevent damaging antique jewelry with repeated cleaning and blackening.
8. Do not expose your silverware to too much salt, as salt will corrode silver to an enormous degree. Silver salt shakers should be washed and dried very carefully whenever they are not being used.
Silver is remarkably low-maintenance compared to other precious materials, so do not be afraid to use your antiques. As mentioned before, silver stays in the best of conditions when used regularly – stowing it away will only result in stains due to humidity or other chemicals. Keep your silver polished and in good condition, and they will definitely last you for a lifetime and more.

I have introduced some methods of collecting antique watches in “Ways of Collect Antique Watches”. Actually, watch collectors who like collecting these antique watches have more important reasons, that is they own high research value. Today, we come to research these antique watches. First, we should learn how to judge the age of antique watch from appearance.
As for this question, the collectors need long-term experience then they can have right judgement. But we still have some simple methods to judge the age according to the regulations of antique watch.
The development of watch can be traced back to the middle time of 16th century and the early time of 17th century. Initially, the watches were mostly elliptical, cylindrical and so on. In middle time of 16th century, geometric shapes were very popular. Watches’ shapes slowly turned into the shapes of plants and animals, such as the flowers, birds and mid-16th century, and slowly to the plants and animals, such as flowers, birds and shells. At that time, the whole productive process was divided. The watch makers, engravers and case makers separately finished their own work. Watches in this time were hanging in the chest or waist, so on top of case you usually can see a metal ring which can be hung. Besides, there was only one hand in the dial. These watches have low accuracy. Therefore, they were usually regarded as decorations.
After the mid time of 17th century, the case gradually turned into round. In order to protect the case, watches had another case, that is two layer case. At this time, the decoration of appearance has become increasingly rich, people use engraving , mosaic and painting and other crafts to decorate case. What’s more, people began to using precious metals to produce case. At this period, enamel and painting arts had grown up in Europe, therefore, enamel painting watches with religious feature, pastoral landscapes and characters painting were the most popular watch.
To the early time of 18th century, the invention of balance spring raised the accuracy of watch movement. Except the hour hand, the minute hand had appeared in the dial. Craftsmen adopted Roman numbers to indicate hour, and Arabic numbers to indicate minutes markers. They also used enamel material to produce dial. By the mid time of 18th century, the hour markers were expressed with Arabic numerals, the minute markers began to become smaller or disappear with intervals.
In the end of 18th century, many watch makers’ name began to appear on the dial, and the second hand greatly improve the accuracy of time.
From the end of 18th century to early time of 19th century, the appearance design of watch turned simple. In the mid of 19th century, two cases gradually disappeared. At this time, markers were usually Roman numbers.
Watch industry has a prosperous development from 20th century.
These are some simple methods to judge the age of antique watches. But due to traditional factors, there may be some designs spanned two ages. We still need more practice to get experience.
